Call to Order
President Alice Simpkins called the TBCU/SIG business meeting to order with greetings. The meeting continued with the introductions from the membership.
Minutes/Financial Report
Minutes from the May 20, 2003 TBCU/SIG group held in at the AIR Forum in Tampa, Florida and Financial Statement from May 17, 2003 B October 13, 2003 presented by Cathy Tanner (outgoing Secretary/Treasurer), were read and approved.
Membership Report
The membership roster was distributed showing 26 active and 42 inactive members. There was a suggestion to consider a membership drive for TBCU/SIG.
OLD BUSINESS
Constitution and By-Laws
This was placed on hold until the next meeting. Terricita Sass (Norfolk State University) will be contacted about making a report at the AIR Forum in Boston.
TBCU Research Journal
President Simpkins shared that there were currently two articles submitted for the journal. She also shared the previous contents of the last TBCU Research Journal as well as the guidelines for submitting to the journal. She stressed the need for an abstract of 75-100 words in length and in APA format. She urged the membership to submit a summarization of any campus research that can be included as a Research Brief. The deadline for the upcoming journal is May 1, 2004. The information may be emailed to Alice Simpkins or Arlene Wimbley.
Web Site
Currently the web site is not open to the public. A progress report will be shared at the AIR Forum in Boston.
30th Year Celebration
Dorothy Cheagle was again recognized as the chair of the committee. Treva Lee, Carolyn Barnett and Alice Simpkins responded to the call for volunteers.
NEW BUSINESS
NSSE
The membership was encouraged for their institutions to participate in the NSSE (National Survey of Student Engagement).
NSF
President Simpkins shared expressions of concerns from Susan Akin regarding the participation of completing the NSF (National Science Foundation) surveys. Treva Lee suggested that the surveys be sent to the IR personnel to spearhead completion. One additional suggestion was for Susan Akin to send a list to President Simpkins who in turn would contact the IR personnel.
Recognitions
Cathy Tanner was recognized for her outstanding service as TBCU/SIG Secretary/Treasurer, the position she held from the AIR Forum in Seattle, Washington until now. Cathy shared that her institution is currently in the process of completing the Compliance Certification under the new Principles of Accreditation Foundations for Quality Enhancement by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She gladly offered to share information or answer questions regarding this new accreditation process.
Caula Beyl from Alabama A&M University was recognized as a first-timer to the TBCU/SIG.
TBCU members serving on committees, as facilitators, etc. at the SAIR meeting were recognized.
Questions/Comments
Carolyn Barnett expressed the need for more dialog on how important IR is to the institution in lieu if the fact that IR functions seem to be no longer important.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned followed by the traditional group picture.
